This phone put Sony in the contenders for the best smartphone. iPhone and SII, make way for the Xperia. In this review, I'll be critically analysing the Sony Xperia S on the basis of design, build quality, functionality and pricing after which I will give a final verdict.
Design- Design wise the Xperia Play looks stunning. We actually stared at the phone for a few minutes before getting our hands on it. The phone sports a 4.3 inch LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen. At the front are three capacitive buttons(Home, Back and Menu) which are marked by three tiny dots which are not easy to spot. There is a firm power button at the top, a volume rocker and a dedicated camera button on the right side. There is a 1.3 megapixel camera at the front and a super 12 megapixel camera at the back.
Build quality- The Xperia S is well protected from the elements. It comes with scratch- resistant glass and the band with the navigation icons is made of metal, basically for better signal reception. The back of the Xperia S is made of matte-plastic which is clean and makes the phone nice to hold.
Functionality- Under the hood of the Xperia S is a powerful dual core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor which is probably the most powerful processor available. It is equipped with a Sony BRAVIA Engine(the one used in TVs,only it is smaller) and runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It features the Timescape user interface which can support live wallpapers well, causing very minimal lag to the system. The same can't be said for the capacitive navigation buttons for they are hard to spot and late in response to touch. Web browsing on the phone is nice and can support HTML5 and Flash content. Thanks to the amazing 720x1280 resolution, videos are amazing to watch. The camera of the Xperia S is one that performs very well in a variety of conditions(12 megapixels is the highest camera resolution ever achieved in a phone). It can shoot HD videos at 1080p@30fps. One major feature of the camera is that it can take pictures even when the entire phone is locked just by pressing the camera button. So, you won't have to waste time unlocking the phone and launching the camera.
Pricing- The Xperia S comes with a hefty price tag of $620(USD). You get the good stuff for a price but we thought that this phone was worth its tag and you shouldn't care much about it either. It is simply a very good phone. If you're not so happy with the price, but still want that 12 megapixel camera, go for the Nokia N8 which comes at a price of $300(USD), but it runs on the relatively dull Symbian OS.
The Verdict- The Sony Xperia S is the best camera phone in the market. Packing stunning looks, great build and some amazing features, the Sony Xperia S is clearly going to make things tough for Apple Inc.'s iPhone 4s and Samsung's Galaxy SII.
