Just when everyone thought that the iPhone 4s dominated the smartphone market, this handset was Samsung's answer to give people a mix of sleek looks and superior functionality into a super slim design. In this review I'll be critically analyzing the Samsung Galaxy SII on the basis of design, build quality, functionality and pricing after which I will give a final verdict.
Design- Samsung has made this handset with the idea in mind that bigger means better. They brought us a handset which was quite huge and not the size of the average cell phone. We faced some difficulties for a few days but then the idea of a huge smartphone set in and now we just love it. The phone supports a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED screen which provides amazing vibrant colours. It has the iconic Samsung home button with the menu and back soft keys on the left and right respectively. At the back is an 8 megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash and the back panel is textured like snake skin, which facilitates grip. Overall the phone just feels good to hold.
Build Quality- Unlike the iPhone 4s Samsung has incorporated safety into the Samsung Galaxy SII. Yes, the back panel is made up of some pretty flimsy plastic, but it does not spoil the overall look of the phone. Instead the plastic acts as a shock absorber and can withstand some really nasty falls. We can assure you that your SII will remain an SII even after a face down 4 foot drop.
Functionality- The Samsung Galaxy SII has definitely bumped up its spec sheet compared to the Galaxy S which was also very pleasing back in its day. The Samsung Galaxy SII supports the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS and the TouchWiz 4.0 interface. Thanks to the super AMOLED screen, viewing websites, multimedia and videos are a sight to sooth sore eyes. Through kinetic scrolling you can get around websites with the utmost ease. You can also customize your menus with a multitude of widgets and set the amount of space they will occupy. There are also settings to optimize battery usage so that you can get out the most of your phones battery. Equipped with a 1.2 GHz Dual core chipset, the SII aims to impress with easy multi-tasking. Added to all this is the power of android. The Gingerbread OS works seamlessly well as it does on most Samsung handsets. And you have the all famous android market to download apps. The SII is also expecting an ICE CREAM SANDWICH (Android 4.0) upgrade which will just add more icing to the cake.
Pricing- Yeah..........you always get the good stuff for a price; a VERY heavy one. The Samsung Galaxy SII comes with a premium pricing but is still much less compared to that of the iPhone 4s. Anyway you just can't say no to a phone which offers so much just because it happens to be overpriced.
The Verdict- Overall a great phone with a good spec sheet and exceptional build quality ,with the $590(USD) price tag, you should definitely go for this phone. If you can hold on for a little longer, the Samsung Galaxy SIII is coming out soon which will have the ICE CREAM SANDWICH OS pre- installed. A little more pricey but worth the wait.
